An Old Country Song

Gypsy Slow Down

Last weekend we took a trip to Roanoke, Virginia.

We drove along with Jake Bugg as our soundtrack and I'm obsessed with his music now.

I love when Witt buys a new CD for a trip we take because when I listen to that music later it brings back happy memories of places we've been.

This in the car on our honeymoon.
This when we were driving around Greensboro, dating.
This for our trip to Canada last year.

I like Roanoke a lot. It's only about two hours away and has a cute downtown with lots of neat things to do. At one point we thought we might move there because of a job opportunity but regardless of where we end up, I've discovered that it's a fun place to visit.

After stopping at a deli that Witt really wanted to try, we went to the Roanoke Star which sits on top of the mountain and which I remember driving by growing up and seeing the star lit up along the side of the road when we traveled.

After we went down the mountain we found out that there was a St. Patrick's Day parade downtown so we went to check it out. I love festivals and we have a knack for stumbling on them when we are out and there was indeed a festival!

Downtown was packed with people but it was a beautiful day so before we went to listen to the band, we went to Taubman Museum and walked around a little bit.

The musuem was small but there were a few pretty things and after the museum we went down to a tent where Witt enjoyed a beer and I had a good ole' Irish whiskey while we listened to the music. I loved seeing the Irish dancers and hearing the bagpipes.

After the festival, we lounged around at the hotel for a bit and then we went out to dinner at Blue5 which was so delicious. I had a barbecue burger with Cajun fries and we had fried green tomatoes for an appetizer which were so good.

Our hotel had two double sized beds and I know we aren't newlyweds anymore because I snuck out of the one we were sleeping in in the middle of the night and into the next one to stretch out and it was glorious. I'm used to our queen sized bed at home and that double was two small when you're 6'3 and 5'11!

The next morning we got breakfast at Mill Mountain Cafe which was so good and then we walked around downtown.

We ate lunch at Awful Arthur's and had oysters on the half shell with greens and bacon and Witt had a po'boy and I had a really good salad with fresh blackened tilapia. Mmm.

After a while it started drizzling and was it so cold so we decided to head back home. We stopped at the Transportation Museum which Witt was looking forward to seeing and looked around at the trains, plains and automobiles.

I can't wait to go back and see more of Roanoke soon.

Gonna sing you an old country song, from the heart
So I can cry your name and call you when I'm sad
When you have gone, run so far from me in the trees so far

Walkin' down that old country lane, drops of rain
Call upon the ones who call your name
Will I see you again and please just come on back home to me
So I'm not all alone

-Jake Bugg
