You Be The Book I'll Be The Binding ~ How We Met

Kaitlyn Suter Photography

I'm throwing one of my best friends a bachelorette party Saturday night, complete with lingerie sugar cookies and leopard print plates. I can't wait to show you the pictures.

And so wedding season is upon me. Cathy's wedding will be next week and my sister Mary's wedding is in May with all the planning for that in full swing.

All the wedding talk has made me realize that it's been almost three years since Witt and I have been married and I've never done a blog about our wedding.

I love our wedding photos. First though, I thought I'd write down our story. And include our fun engagement pictures my talented friend, Kaitlyn, took.

I love hearing about how other couples met so if you are like me, here's our story.

Witt and I met one spring after our mothers had been trying to set us up. They had known each other when Witt was 10 and I was 5, because we were both homeschooled, and they had recently reconnected.

I, however, was dating someone else but I had a single roommate that I thought I'd set him up with.  I facebooked him to get my mom to leave me alone and told Witt about my roommate. Witt didn't want to meet her though, he had been wanting to meet me, so I agreed to meet for coffee at the Green Bean in downtown Greensboro.

We had great conversation and I had a cappuccino but all I left thinking was, my Dad would like that guy. And that he was very tall.

And I went on my merry way.

Witt however, liked me a lot and wanted to keep seeing me. I politely said no since I was dating someone else but thankfully, the relationship I had been in broke off pretty quickly and I felt like I needed to get back together with Witt to see if I had missed out on something.

I wasn't sure how to go about that though and I was lamenting my choices in life when my aunt suggested I just write him a letter explaining things. Of course I took the cowardly way out and texted him. I invited him to my parent's surprise anniversary party to which my sisters and I had hastily invited his parents too lest it be too obvious. Classy I know.

A few days after the party Witt called me and we started hanging out. Our first date was to a Greek place and our second date was at a Vietnamese place in downtown Greensboro. On our second date we stayed out well past midnight having a beer and going from place to place, we couldn't stop talking. He sang Elvis to me loudly as he drove me back to my apartment.

We hit it off instantly. I was smitten because he wrote me handwritten letters and told me my eyes were green like a stormy sea. I could tell he really liked me and I loved that I didn't have to guess.

He played this song for me the first time I visited him in the Little Brick House, though he insisted it wasn't about me...

Shortly after we met, he went on a trip out west with an old friend and I went to Canada for a few weeks with my family. While I was there I realized just how much I missed him. He called me several times and my dad let me make one long distance phone call and that was when Witt said he knew I liked him.

We had so much in common, from our backgrounds and the books we read to the things we liked to do, history, museums  antique stores, artsy movies, food.

When we both came back from our trips I remember opening the door to my apartment where I was seeing him for the first time in a while and throwing myself at him in a huge hug. He hugged me back and I knew I really really liked him.

After that we hung out a lot and it wasn't long before Witt told me he loved me. We would sit on the dock at my apartment complex and share a bottle of wine and talk until 3 in the morning. He listened to me drone on about Paris where my heart still was and he told me everything about himself with no pretense.

After a month of dating Witt told me he wanted to get married. After a few glasses of wine he also told me he was probably going to go bald and would I be ok with that if we got married. I said that would be fine.

He wrote a letter to my Dad asking if he could marry me and two months later in November we were engaged.

I had always wanted a fall wedding but we decided to get married 6 months later in May so that we would have the summer to settle in before I had to go back to school in the fall.

And so it was a very auspicious beginning.

  1. What a great story! I probably would have done similar things, like inviting other people to the anniversary party to keep from looking obvious. My husband and I also began discussing marriage after about a month.

I like it when guys do these sweet things like write letters. In a way it shows you how much they care. I hope to meet a sweet guy like that one day, but I've got a lot of time on my hands before that happens ;)

  12. This is a beautiful story Claire! You know it is very important to find a soul mate and marry him. I feel like that with my husband. He is my best friend and we are very much alike. He thinks like me and I know exactly what is going on in his mind. I wish to you to always feel for him the love you felt during the first days of your relationship.
