Baby, Let Me Follow You Down

Well here I am, sipping an olive martini in a hotel cup while watching food network and laying on a hotel bed. We are full on into our fall North trip for Witt's 30th (!) birthday and I am happy to report that the day has been a success. I was woken up at 4:30am this morning after which I promptly went downstairs, got in the car and went back to sleep. I woke up to a cloudy pink sunrise in the front windshield and put on my make-up by the light of the car mirror. After a cappuccino from a little coffee joint in Virginia I was feeling happy about being on vacation. Yeah! Vacation. Since this vacation is a happy time and blogging makes me happy and this hotel has WI-FI I am going to post a bit about our trip so far.

Today was our touristy day. We are heading up to Vermont to stay with some friends for part of our trip so on the way we stopped at Harper's Ferry in West Virginia. We went to the little civil war historic downtown which was very charming. I am an Autumn girl and the changing crispness in the air is one of my favorite parts of fall.

I loved the beautiful old buildings and especially St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. And the leaves are starting to change up here which is my favorite. Everything is new again and different.

Of course, Witt's favorite part was by the river.

After Harper's Ferry there was some Jim Gaffigan in the car and Edward Sharpe and then we got to Gettysburg. I went a few years ago, but Witt had never been so first we went to the museum. I was not very enthralled. First of all because I have a short attention span and can only look at so many guns and uniforms and guns and swords and guns. Second because I'm a southern girl! The south will rise again! Just kidding that wasn't a reason but walking around the monuments and being outdoors was better.

Boots! Where have you been the last six months? I was sweltering in the 100 degree heat and you were snugly tucked away in a box, waiting for me. So happy to see you again!

Gettysburg downtown was very touristy. A lot of ghost tours. We ate dinner in downtown Gettysburg at Farnsworth House, a historical hotel. We were looking for their tavern and ended up on the patio because the women in charge were in historical garb and maybe a bit intimidating. We sat down and felt silly because the menu was so expensive but we didn't want to be those people and ask if we can move to the bar since our waitress already had us. So we had appetizers and drinks. I had the Confederate which was Irish whiskey and Champagne. Um, yes please! It was really good. I also had a wonderful tomato basil soup. We were served pickled watermelon rind which I did not try but Witt said was "tooth numbing sweet".

It was a lovely day and I'm excited about the rest of our trip up to Boston and Maine and taking in the Autumn air. I'll keep you updated!
